“We need to be able to connect with people emotionally. Because if we can't do that, then everything, all of the brilliant things that you have to say, are going in one ear and out the other,” explains Kyle Gray, world-class presentation coach, story strategist and author.

Healthcare experts tend to struggle with relaying information in a way that is relatable and understandable to their audience. It’s one thing to know how to solve a problem, but it’s another to actually be able to connect emotionally with people and influence them to want to work with you.

So how do you persuade people that you can actually help them, so that they will say yes to working with you?

In this episode, Kyle discusses how to utilize the ancient technology of storytelling to get your messages across to really empathize with your chosen audience. There are certain key elements to effective storytelling and once you learn these elements, you can draw from your own life experiences to share stories that convey your message in a way that can be universally understood.

Quotes
“This is an ancient technology, maybe the most ancient technology, is storytelling. And it's a very specific formula that allows us to resonate and understand and remember things.” (7:01-7:15 | Kyle)
“The trick here is to get to these moments and use your client's words to tell your story. And even though the story is about you, your clients are going to experience it as if they're experiencing their own life, and they get to walk through your experience to see how you came to the solution.” (10:27-10:46 | Kyle)
“We need to be able to connect with them emotionally, because if we can't do that, then everything, all of the brilliant things that you have to say, are going in one ear and out the other.” (11:33-11:42 | Kyle)
“Instead of trying to teach us how to solve a problem, really focus your teaching on overcoming those beliefs and objections to get them open to it.” (15:38-15:49 | Kyle)
“It's your responsibility to learn how to communicate in this way, and it's not good enough to just be able to solve the problem.” (28:05-28:15 | Kyle)
“One story could really change your life and change so many other people's lives.” (28:32-28:37 | Kyle)

“Don't mistake the opportunity for Long COVID with the frustration of dealing with the fast moving world of acute COVID. This is a big opportunity, not only to grow your practice, but quite frankly, to put a massive stake into the ground around the power of root cause medicine and an opportunity to build an evidence base that I think is of huge significance for the whole field,” shares Tom Blue, healthcare entrepreneur.
Functional medicine practitioners face two main challenges when growing their practices. One, there is a large upfront time investment required for learning. Second, most insurance providers will not work with functional medicine practices and the burden of cost then falls on the patients, many of whom will not want to invest more into their healthcare.
So how do you navigate these challenges and future proof your practice?
In this episode, Tom discusses the importance of niching down your outreach to focus on those patients whose needs are not being met by the traditional healthcare system, like those with autoimmune conditions and other chronic pain conditions. He explains that Long-Covid is a key niche to target, because it is underserved and symptoms-based management alone is not sustainable.
He also talks about ways to further future-proof your practice by incorporating health trackers like the Aura Ring and utilizing ChatGPT for creating educational materials.

Quotes
“We have essentially handed over control of curating our health care to a payer that only seldom has our interests at heart. So think about what your car or your house would look like, if the only things you did to take care of it were covered by Geico. If you think about the declining state of the American human condition, from a health standpoint, I think a lot of it has to do with this very thing. It's like preventive care, that root cause resolution of things. These are more value judgments than things that pose the risk of financial ruin. So they're not really in the domain of what insurance should cover anyway. But unfortunately, most consumers have yet to wade into that reality.” (8:29-9:10 | Tom)
“If you're wanting to solve pains, focus on conditions that are painful and where the healthcare system leaves people wanting more.” (15:41-15:48 | Tom)
“There's this astonishingly large population of people that a year ago, two years ago, were essentially the picture of health and function. And all of a sudden, they can't walk around the block without being completely exhausted.” (16:50-17:05 | Tom)
“Unlike a lot of chronic conditions that, like the frog in the pot of boiling water, progress so slowly you're constantly recalibrating what normal is and you forget how good you used to feel, Long COVID is the opposite of that.” (17:23-17:35 | Tom)
“The only way we have to quantify health historically has been our bathroom scale, which is generally a bad news generator. Now that we have tools like an Aura Ring, you've got this high resolution continuous picture of your health in many different dimensions. And there’s good news to be found in it.” (26:36-26:57 | Tom)
“Don't mistake the opportunity for Long COVID with the frustration of dealing with the fast moving world of acute COVID. This is a big opportunity, not only to grow your practice, but quite frankly, to put a massive stake into the ground around the power of root cause medicine and an opportunity to build an evidence base that I think is of huge significance for the whole field.” (29:19-29:43 | Tom)

“America's drop in life expectancy is ridiculous compared to the rest of the world. And there's so many things driving that and many of those things would be helped with the deployment of functional medicine at scale,” explains James Maskell, co-founder of the Functional Forum and author of The Evolution of Medicine and The Community Cure.
The increase in people being diagnosed with chronic illnesses is a real problem, especially in America. In order to really change this, functional medicine and group visits have to be adopted on a wide scale.
But how do you get consumers to commit to making the necessary changes?
And how do you equip integrative and functional medicine providers to guide that transition more effectively?
In this episode, James discusses the benefits of group care, the importance of finding ways to deliver the functional medicine system without stacking more tasks onto the doctors’ plates, and the ways in which a provider can become a private functional medicine practitioner without even having to open a whole new physical practice.

Quotes
“You could probably start a practice for $20,000 or less because you just needed a laptop, you could do majority telemedicine,  work in a co-working space, and you don’t need all of the kind of capital that was needed previously.” (6:48-7:00 | James)
“The Evolution of Medicine brand and company has always been to help doctors make the switch to practice in a low overhead functional medicine environment.” (9:20-9:29 | James)
“We needed to really find a way of delivering this functional medicine operating system in a way that was not reliant on doctors becoming executors, actually not reliant on doctors at all.” (11:06-11:17 | James)
“Do virtual groups work? It turns out they do, and in many cases, much better.” (14:42-14:46 | James)
“People were so grateful to have this kind of community. We saw people supporting each other in interesting ways. And we saw also that with these longitudinal sessions, like it started off as a three month group, real friendships were possible. And they were not only possible, but they were happening.” (17:11-17:27 | James)
“America's drop in life expectancy is ridiculous compared to the rest of the world. And there's so many things driving that and many of those things would be helped with the deployment of functional medicine at scale.” (20:06-20:16 | James)

Burnout is a prevalent issue in the healthcare industry, with a majority of practitioners experiencing its negative effects. That’s why Dr. Lara Salyer introduced the concept of a “flow-channeled culture," which combines flow with anti-burnout strategies to create a healthier work environment for healthcare professionals (and entrepreneurs alike).
A flow-channeled culture promotes feedback, integrity, communication, and a focus on strengths. It encourages practitioners to concentrate on high cognitive tasks and maintain a systems overview. Creating a psychologically safe space is also essential in fostering this culture.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of adopting a catalyst culture, the AHA (Anchor, Highlight, Activate) framework to retro-engineer burnout, and the role of AI and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in minimizing burnout and increasing practitioner effectiveness.
Quotes
"One of my core values is efficiency, and not in the hyper productivity way, but the fact that I'm only going to say YES to things that absolutely matter to me." (06:06-06:15 | Dr. Lara Salyer)
"When you are a happier practitioner, you're going to attract patients differently. You're going to also see better outcomes. You're going to attract patients that understand and respect the culture that you're setting." (07:46-07:59 | Dr. Lara Salyer)
"If you're in a brick and mortar practice, there's a lot you can do to create a psychologically safe environment. You can have common language and shared values with your staff. You can have these repeatedly talked about, almost like a drum beating culture that this is what we believe." (25:03-25:19 | Dr. Lara Salyer)
"I am on a mission to teach a million health professionals how they can tap into flow so that they can regain that autonomy and be more joyful and have fun in medicine again, and less burnout." (30:10-30:21 | Dr. Lara Salyer)

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely adopted since the release of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022… amassing over 100 million active monthly users in less than 2 months.
It’s safe to say that AI tools are here to stay and have already begun to transform the way people approach marketing thanks to the arrival of tools like ChatGPT.
“Ultimately, I believe this technology is so different from anything else out there is that people that start with ChatGPT very quickly realize how much it increases their productivity. And I believe if it weren't for this productivity boost, we wouldn't really be seeing the broad adoption that we've seen with ChatGPT,” explains host Uli Iserloh.
Uli believes that AI tools like ChatGPT and integrated applications will continue to change how consumers and patients engage in marketing. These tools provide a fantastic opportunity for generating emails, social media content, and educational materials in addition to an as of yet unlimited number of other types of content.
In this episode, he shares why ChatGPT changed the game for AI, how this new technology increases productivity, and what other AI tools are currently available for making people’s lives and jobs easier.
Quotes
“I think ultimately that the reason that made this technology so different from anything else out there is that people that start with ChatGPT very quickly realize how much it increases their productivity. And I believe if it weren't for this productivity boost, we wouldn't really be seeing the broad adoption that we've seen with ChatGPT.” (3:28-3:50 | Uli)
“With the right prompts, it is very easy to churn out 10-15 different social media posts. In fact, you could take the emails that ChatGPT wrote for you and turn them into shorter social media posts.” (12:04-12:17 | Uli)
“You can't just be a great healer, a great clinician, but you also have to be a great educator.” (17:54-18:00 | Uli)
“This is not just some new shiny toy that will fade away in a few months. This will fundamentally transform how we do marketing.” (20:47-20:56 | Uli)

Written information is more available than ever before – thanks to the power of AI tools. This means that more people are going to be relying on industry experts to know what information to trust.
A personal brand is an identity based around a person’s expertise, reputation, ideas, and personality. As a personal brand, developing trust is the most important step for success.
The inspirational stories and quirks that set a person apart from others in their industry are going to be what generates trust. Additionally, using formats like video in addition to written and spoken content can help the audience feel more engaged and connected.
“Informational content won't be as much of a differentiator. But I think what will set people apart is the inspirational content, stuff that's more full of your own personality, your quirks, your stories,” explains Mike Kim, speaker, online educator, brand strategist, and author of You Are The Brand.
Mike is an expert at what it takes to build a personal brand, like determining a person’s unique point of view, finding their voice, and showing up consistently on camera.
In this episode, we discuss how to build a personal brand, reasons to branch into video content, and the changes being seen in the industry due to the rise of AI bots like Chat GPT.
Quotes
“Our value as personal brands and as experts in our industry, is that we are going to become trust filters for people.” (03:31-3:39 | Mike)
“If GPT and all these other things make written content somewhat easier and or maybe even more obsolete down the road, you've got to be in front of the camera and let people see you.” (8:01-8:09 | Mike)
“Informational content won't be as much of a differentiator. But I think what will set people apart is the inspirational content, stuff that's more full of your own personality, your quirks, your stories.” (11:25-11:36 | Mike)
“What technology forces people to do more than anything is, at least in the expert industry, we're going to have to band together and build communities.” (29:17-29:23 | Mike)

Change cannot be made solely based on ordering someone to do something or just giving them information. People need to first have a strong image of their ‘why’, so that they make the choice to commit to change.
Once patients have determined what the positive emotional attractor is for them specifically, then self-efficacy improves and they begin to advocate for the kind of care they want.
A coach helps by being a non-judgemental listener, taking some of the workload off the practitioner, facilitating groups where individuals can support each other, and improving overall emotional wellness.
Without a health coach, many people will give up or fall short of their goals.
Coaches can help explain the reasons why people should make certain lifestyle changes based on their desired future.
Plus, with the assistance of a coach, patients are more likely to succeed and feel that they have control over their own health outcomes.
“We see coaching as the key to reducing chronic disease as well as reducing healthcare costs,” explains Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum, founder and CEO of the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA), a collaboration with the Institute of Functional Medicine.
FMCA trains people to become functional medicine health coaches and also supports practitioners and businesses to hire the graduates.
In this episode, we discuss the power of health coaching and how it can benefit not only patients, but practitioners as well.
Quotes
“Coaches shine when they're facilitating groups. Groups are such a powerful way for change to happen.” (14:27-14:34 | Sandra)
“Coaches are trained to be true listeners. They are coming into each encounter with somebody with mindfulness, and it's a judgment free zone.” (17:03-17:13 | Sandra)
“We have a critical shortage of mental health professionals, and coaches can play a huge role in supporting emotional wellness.” (20:34-20:43 | Sandra)
“We see coaching as the key to reducing chronic disease, as well as reducing healthcare costs.” (24:25-24:33 | Sandra)

“When it comes to integrative medicine, it’s not a quick fix approach. It’s about really having high buy-in and knowing that this is a lifetime shift in our thinking, in our lifestyle habits, in all of those pieces and so we really do need support longterm to be able to be successful,” explains Dr. Michelle Peris, ND.
Dr. Peris is the clinical director of the Poppy Clinic and creator of The Wild Collective, a community health initiative focused on health education and women’s empowerment.
In this episode, we discuss the power of community and group-based healthcare to create lasting health transformation.
Without community, many patients struggle with consistently sticking with integrative health programs. Long-term support from like-minded individuals is vital to increasing buy-in and commitment. The Wild Collective provides women a safe place to be educated on their healthcare needs and cheerlead one another along the journey.
When we hear others tell stories similar to our own, it helps normalize our own experiences. That can help open people up to sharing more about their own stories, and as this happens, the community grows stronger as a whole.
Quotes
“Community medicine and group health have a compelling solution for helping patients and community members at large start to take radical responsibility.” (3:29-3:39 | Dr. Peris)
“When it comes to integrative medicine, it’s not a quick fix approach. It’s about really having high buy-in and knowing that this is a lifetime shift in our thinking, in our lifestyle habits, in all of those pieces and so we really do need support longterm to be able to be successful.” (4:35-4:53 | Dr. Peris)
“When I started to put the women that I served together, a lot of powerful things happened.” (4:55-5:00 | Dr. Peris)
“Taking imperfect action is the only way we are going to be able to bring new ideas and innovative opportunities forward.” (7:19-7:25 | Dr. Peris)

“I always tell people today, anywhere you are in your life, you need something in front of you to pull you, otherwise your paths will take you and bring you back,” explains Tony Grebmeier, serial entrepreneur and owner operator of the Be Fulfilled journal and app.
In this episode we discuss the concepts of drivers and drainers and how they factor into long term success.
Tony was struggling to feel fulfilled by his life. As debt piled up and he saw any way out close off, he began to contemplate suicide. Luckily, a good friend called Tony right as he was writing his suicide note and changed his mindset completely. He explained to Tony that his life has value and purpose, but that how he was choosing to live it at that time did not.
After this mindset shift, Tony began seeking personal fulfillment. He started to think about the driving forces that were pushing him forward and conversely thinking about the draining forces that were sucking the energy from him.
When we can recognize what drives us and what drains us, then we can be more mindful about how we choose to spend our time. Instead of making a bunch of excuses, change your perspective and think about what you might be able to achieve if you were brave enough to try.
Quotes
“I always tell people today, anywhere you are in your life, you need something in front of you to pull you, because otherwise your paths will take you and bring you back.” (3:59-4:06 | Tony)
“For something to change, I understand that it’s not out there. It's in me.” (4:32-4:35 | Tony)
“My dad wasn't around like the dads most people had growing up. I never threw a football and never tossed a baseball, I could make a ton of excuses. But what I did instead was I learned to accept people for who they are, not for who I want them to be.” (10:30-10:42 | Tony) Audiogram
“I can be crippled by fear, or I can realize that if I put my crutches down, I have the capacity to walk today freely.” (13:26-13:34 | Tony)
